La place des grands-parents dans l'éducation Montessori

Montessori and grandparents

Montessori is a pedagogical approach developed by Maria Montessori at the beginning of the 20th century. It emphasizes autonomy, independence and respect for the natural development of each child. Although Montessori is generally associated with preschools and primary schools, the principles of this approach can also be applied in the family context, including the relationship between grandparents and grandchildren.

In the Montessori approach, grandparents play an important role as members of the extended family. They can provide support and experience while respecting the principles of the Montessori approach. Here are some ideas for incorporating Montessori principles into the relationship between grandparents and grandchildren:

  1. Encourage independence: Grandparents can help children develop independence by allowing them to make choices and complete tasks on their own. They can encourage grandchildren to dress themselves, prepare simple snacks, or take care of some age-appropriate household chores.

  2. Respect the rhythm of the child: Grandparents can be attentive to the individual needs and interests of each child. They can create a calm environment conducive to exploration and learning, avoiding overstimulating grandchildren with too many toys or activities.

  3. Encourage concentration: Grandparents can suggest activities that encourage children's concentration and attention. This may include manipulative games, puzzles, books, or art activities.

  4. Respect natural development: Grandparents can learn about the different developmental stages of children and adapt to their changing needs. They can offer activities adapted to the age and abilities of each child, avoiding imposing tasks that are too difficult or infantilizing them.

  5. Create intergenerational bonds: Grandparents often have a wealth of experience and knowledge to share with their grandchildren. They can tell stories, teach life skills, share family traditions, or just spend quality time together. These interactions promote intergenerational bonds and strengthen the feeling of belonging to the family.

The Montessori approach emphasizes respect for the child as a capable and autonomous individual. By integrating these principles into the relationship between grandparents and grandchildren, it is possible to create a positive family environment, which promotes the development and well-being of children.
